Our Southwark storage centre is a taxi, car or bus ride away from Charing Cross Railway Station and can often work out much cheaper alternative than any on-site left-luggage services that may be available.
For example*: If you’re a family with 4 bags to store for 5 days - the typical cost of leaving luggage at major London transport hubs can be as much as £8 per bag per day - and five days could easily cost well over £100.
ABC Selfstore lockers - which will take all 4 bags and more - start at less than £2 a day. That could save you £100 on that 5 day stay with 4 bags! If you have more bags or are staying longer then the savings could be even greater.

Charing Cross railwaystation is one of the most well-known London stations, and is also one of the busiest. It was built in 1864, and was close to an original location for the Eleanor Cross. The latter has long since disappeared, but the area, and the station, retain the name. The area chosen for the station was rather small, and so the designer, John Hawkshaw, had to fit in as many platforms as possible using complicated architecture. The station is also built slightly above the natural ground, resting on a brick viaduct, and causing some unevenness in the level of the rails in different parts of the station.
Over a year after Charing Cross Station was opened in 1864, an entrepreneur opened a hotel at the front, creating a very ornate font based upon French Renaissance architecture. This has given the modern station its distinctive gothic look which it retains to this day. The designers of the Hotel also created a replica of the original Eleanor cross, which is still extant. In recent years the statue has become very weathered, leading to restoration efforts in 2010, restoring the Eleanor Cross to its 1860s appearance, and helping to preserve one of the most interesting features of this grand old London station.
Perhaps one of the most well-known facts about Charing Cross station is the terrible accident which occurred at the beginning of the 20th century. In December of 1905, a section of the roof to the south of Charing Cross station collapsed, killing 6 people. In the minutes before the collapse, it was noticed that one of the rods supporting the roof had collapsed, and there was sagging in the area, along with cracking along one wall. There was about 12 minutes between the snapping of the rod and the final collapse, which allowed the area to be evacuated. The roof did not fall straight down, but collapsed into a neighbouring theatre. Although two workmen on the roof were killed plus a bookstall owner on the ground, half of those killed by the fall were working in that theatre. At an inquest, some experts considered that the failure was caused by a fault in the rod which had snapped, but that the design of the roof was also flawed. Due to the accident, the owners of the station decided to completely replace the roof. Even though Charing Cross was damaged in World War II, the new roof remained intact.
