About Stanstead Airport
Located around 30 miles from London, Stansted Airport is named after the tiny village of Stansted Mount Fitchet, although the actual airport is rather to the south of this area, and is closer to Bishops Stortford, in Essex. Despite not being in London, Stansted is one of the most widely used airports in the area, and is considered to be one of London's six international airports, along with the much more distant Luton. As well as being a civilian airport, Stansted is also used by businesses, carriers and private jets, with companies such as Harrods and even state visits from international dignitaries using this airport to enter the UK.
Stansted Airport began as a military base during the Second World War. Stansted was home to both the Royal Air Force and the US Air Force (USAAF), both as a place to prepare bombers, and to maintain them and other planes. Stansted was at one point managed by the USAAF Eighth Force in 1942, and remained a storage and military base until the end of the War. The Air Ministry maintained RAF Stansted Mount Fitchet as an air force base until 1949, when it was finally handed over to the Civil Aviation Ministry. Although the US Air Force reconsidered the base in 1954, Stansted remained in civilian hands, eventually being owned by British Airways.
To begin with, Stansted was mainly used for holiday destinations, as operators were eager to escape the high prices charged by both Gatwick and Heathrow. The government, however, had always intended Stansted to become the third major airport in the London area, and during the late 1960s the whole airport was expanded and developed, finally improving it in the 1980s to allow 15 million passengers to use the airport every year. It is estimated that the new constructions at the end of the 80s have made Stansted one of the most expensive airport builds of the modern era.
However, this investment was shown to have paid off when American Airlines started to use the airport on its long-haul flights, and other nations followed suit. Many of these were briefly abandoned after the 9/11 attacks. However, long-haul flights from Stansted are currently operating, with flights to America every day. Stansted has also been nominated as the airport that planes will be diverted to in the event of a hijack or suspected incident, and is also used by planes needing to perform an emergency landing.
