About Victoria Coach and Bus Station
Victoria is one of the busiest rail terminals in the capital, and it is no surprise that it needs its own coach and bus station in order to cope with the massive demand for this transport on the pavement outside the train station. Victoria Coach and Bus Station is the largest in the capital, and is used by long-distant coaches and local bus travel around the city. The Coach station itself is a piece of modernist architecture that has withstood the Second World War and still looks impressive even today. The bus station is the city's busiest, and has 19 bus routes connecting Victoria rail station to the wider city, with over 200 buses an hour travelling through the bus station during peak times. At one time there was a roof over the lanes of the bus station, but this was demolished while the Train terminus was undergoing refurbishment in 2003.
The Coach Station was built in 1932, and is designed in Art Deco architectural style by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, architects. It became part of the National Bus Company in 1970, and became the Victoria Coach and Bus Station. This name lasted for many years, and a great deal of refurbishment and redesigning of the interior of the station was done in the early 1990s in order to bring the Victoria Coach and Bus Station up to modern standards.
The station serves a number of regions, including all the airports in the London area, and then long-distance coach journeys to places like Portsmouth, Eastbourne and Guildford. As well as travelling inside the UK, the Victoria coach station also makes international transport journeys, including to Paris, Dover and Calais, Lille, Brussels and The Hague, and also Brussels, Frankfurt, Mannheim, and Hannover. All of these journeys are operated by Eurolines Coach services from the Victoria Coach Station in London.
The bus also goes much further afield in the UK, with coach journeys to Aberystwyth, Wrexham, South Shields and Newcastle Upon Tyne. Many of these coaches go as far as the North of England, with locations in Yorkshire, Durham and The Lake District being serviced by the Victoria Coach Station. Victoria Bus station services places in London, taking in areas such as Lambeth Bridge, St Thomas's Hospital and Buckingham Palace, giving tourists a great day out without having to go too far from the terminus at Victoria Station.
