London Waterloo is one of the oldest stations in the capital, and is also considered to be the busiest, with many visitors from around the country, and even from abroad. The station is very close to the South Bank arts centres, and this makes it a very popular tourist destination. Waterloo station sees nearly 90 million passengers every year judged by in-house ticket sales alone, and the true number of people may be even greater. Waterloo has been compared with passenger terminals in Europe, although it is not quite as massive as the Gare du Nord in Paris, and has the largest number of platforms and the greatest concourse expanse in all of the UK. It is a terminus for trains coming in from the South West of England, and for express services to the coast.
Waterloo Station was originally built in 1848, and was called Waterloo Bridge station. The ground underneath the building was very marshy, as is much of London, and so the entire station had to be raised above this land on arches, rather like stilt-houses in other parts of the world. By 1886 no-one was referring to the station as Waterloo Bridge, and the company quietly accepted the new name of the station as 'Waterloo'. By this time, the needs of the station had vastly outgrown the single station, and two more platforms were added, known as the 'Cyprus Station'. Another six added in 1885 were called the 'Khartoum station'. These individual stations were all given a separate booking station, and the whole area of Waterloo rail terminus became very complicated. This made Waterloo famous, becoming the punchline of many jokes from the late nineteenth century, with people being lost at Waterloo being a popular sketch for music halls.
Rebuilding was finally finished in 1922, giving Waterloo Station a single concourse and 21 platforms. The whole building was exquisitely designed, with space on the Victory Arch entrance way to commemorate fallen railway workers fighting in the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Until the 1940s, a small train service transported coffins from Waterloo Station to Brookwood Cemetery, although this was destroyed during the Blitz. Until recently, there was also a Police station at Waterloo, complete with cells, and running an operation using around 40 British Transport Police officers. This, along with the Eurostar connections, were closed in 2009, although there is a Hub Team of officers from London Underground still operating inside Waterloo Station.
