The borough of Barnet is found in the North London area of Middlesex. On three sides it touches other London boroughs, including Camden and Enfield, but also shares a border with the county of Hertfordshire. The name Barnet has its origins in the Old English word for burnt land.
The borough is divided into different parts, including High Barnet, Whetstone, Edgware and Mill Hill in the north, with more heavily build up areas in the south such as Hendon and Finchley. The south also includes the area of Golders Green. Different parts of Barnet are served by London Underground tube stations, including the Golders Green station on the Northern line, or Hendon railway station on National Rail. A number of the northern parts of the borough are served by the Edgware portion of the Northern Line.
The area has an interesting past. Barnet is bordered by the former Roman road of Watling Street, and there have been a number of early Roman finds discovered in the borough. However, perhaps its greatest claim to fame is in the 15th century Battle of Barnet. This was part of the Wars of the Roses, a civil war between the houses of York and Lancaster. The battle in 1471 was a decisive victory for Edward of York, as he captured Henry VI of Lancaster. Warwick, known as 'the Kingmaker' and his brother John Neville were both killed, paving the way for Edward to capture Henry VI at Tewkesbury.
Visitors can see some relics of the Battle in the Barnet museum, High Barnet. Visitors may also consider a trip the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon. Nearby in Hendon is the Church Farmhouse Museum, which is sited in an ancient farm building, and is particularly noted for its gardens and the famous Maze.
Barnet has a number of art centres and community halls, such as the All Saints Arts Centre in Whetstone. This offers activities to suit all ages, from Taekwondo and ballroom dancing to sculpture and drawing. This centre draws in hundreds of people each week, and is one of the biggest arts centres in the area.
Barnet is home to Brent Cross, which lies between Cricklewood and Hendon. This shopping centre was founded in 1975, and was designed to mimic the style of American shopping malls. It has been regularly expanded and enlarged since that date, and is widely known as one of London's busiest shopping areas.
