The district of Battersea in the London SW11 postcode is found on the river Thames' south bank, and cuts along the edge of Westminster before coming into contact with Wandsworth, forming a neat triangle of land. This area has been known since Anglo-Saxon times, when it was known as Badric's Island, or Badrice's ieg. From this came the medieval name of Patricesy, only later being known as Battersea. The land was originally an island, with the Anglo-Saxon and medieval settlers reclaiming most of the area from the river using culverts. This land has been built on for many centuries, and includes famous historical sites such as St Mary's Church, located where the original site once stood.
Battersea used to be home to a number of agricultural sites which were the basis of the City of London's food supplies, such as asparagus which was sold in 'Battersea bundles'. More than 300 acres of land in Battersea district were used by gardeners during the last quarter of the 18th century, and many of the products grown there have given their names to parts of modern Battersea, such as Lavender Hill, or Pig Hill. Other parts of the district where given over to industrial work, including the land around the River Wandle, where French Huguenots settled in the 16th and 17th centuries. As Britain became more industrialised, more and more of Battersea was turned into factories around this river and the Thames. At the same time, the village areas of Battersea became popular with wealthy people, who often built their country houses around the district.
Battersea finally became a part of the wider London area when railways connected it to the city. The district became known for its railway locomotive works, and there were three depots around the north part of Battersea. This caused a considerable increase in the population of this district, along with creating plenty of self storage sites which are still in use today. All of these transport facilities make Battersea one of the most visited districts in London.
The area has many tourist attractions which generate wealth for the district. Places such as New Covent Garden Market, Battersea Park and the Shaftesbury Park Estate, St Mary's Church where William Blake was married, Battersea Arts Centre which specialises in Music and Theatre, and Northcote Road which is a centre for shopping in the district, and Clapham Junction, one of the busiest and most well-known railway stations in the country.
