About Belmont

Belmont, in teh London SM2 postcode area, is a district on the very edge of London, being found around the area of Sutton Borough. Unlike most of the districts which can be found in London, Belmont is named after a village which was founded in the mid-nineteenth century. It was created through the building of a railway station in 1865, originally known as the California Station. The name was changed to Belmont in the 1870s, and this subsequently lead to the village being named after the station. The reason for the emergence of a village in that area was the building of Banstead Asylum in 1877. The psychiatric hospital was close to Belmont railway station, and the village grew up in order to supply the Asylum with necessities, including loading the coal and goods required to fuel the Hospital's Gasworks, and Marshall Inman bought rights to develop the land, eventually building homes right to the edge of Banstead Downs.

After the closing of large mental hospitals in the 1980s, Banstead Asylum was closed and most of it was demolished, with the remaining land becoming Belmont Heights. During this period, a Hospital was developed to the north of the town; this hospital had been used during the Second World War as a military and civilian institution, but its origins are in the Foundling Hospital and School which was established during the 19th Century. Children in Belmont District School were from poor backgrounds, and were taken from a number of parishes in London. Girls in the school were housed along Banstead Road, with boys being placed in Brighton Road, the latter would later become Belmont Workhouse, with Banstead being a Sanatorium. The Poor School was finally closed in 1902.

There are several hospital institutions in the district, such as the Royal Marsden Hospital, which has its secondary site in the area formally used for the poor school. The sites were bought up in 1962, and the Institute of Cancer Research's second hospital was built in this site. It was at the site in Sutton that Jacques Miller discovered that the Thymus produced T cells, which are essential for immune system response. Many celebrities, including band members of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, have had cancer treatment in the Sutton Royal Marsden Hospital.

Despite the relative youth of the district, there are groups dedicated to researching the area. This has uncovered evidence of Neolithic huts close to Brighton Road, and Roman and Saxon graves on Banstead Golf Course.
