About Brent

The borough of Brent can be found in the North West corner of London. It is part of the group of London boroughs known as Outer London. It shares borders with Barnet and Camden in the east, and Kensington to the south. It also shares Watling Street, the Roman road from London to St Albans, with Barnet.

The name Brent is considered to originate in the name of the Celtic goddess, Brigantia. This is one of the earliest origins for a name in London, with most areas taking Anglo-Saxon names. Brent also shares its name with the river which runs through it. There are many interesting locations in Brent, including Wembley and Neasden.

Wembley is probably the most famous area of Brent, and includes the well-known Wembley Stadium. The name Wembley is Anglo-Saxon, and until the beginning of the 19th century was a small, underdeveloped village which nevertheless was considered to be one of the richest in the area. At the end of the 19th century, Wembley had its own church, school, Working Men's Hall, and hospital. In 1924, the area was the site of the British Empire Exhibition.

Wembley stadium was built in Wembley Park to house the final of the 1923 Football Cup. The following year, the stadium was used to support the Empire Exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition decided to stay in the area, and large numbers of houses were built for this purpose. After the end of the exhibition, most of the park was demolished, leaving the stadium the only building standing. in 1948, the stadium held the 14th Olympic games. The "Twin Towers" stadium was itself demolished in 2003 and the "New" stadium eventually opened in 2007.

Other interesting areas in the borough of Brent are Harlesden, proud of its multicultural links to the Caribbean, Portugal, Brazil, and Ireland. Audley Harrison, the boxer, was born in this area. Kensal Green is well known for its cemetery, where well-known people such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Thackeray and Anthony Trollope are buried. Sudbury, which is in the Harrow section of Brent, is known for Barham Park, which contains some 18th century landscaped gardens.

Brent is well supplied by the many London Underground stations in the area, and has some stations which provide links between Underground and Overground train services. Places such as the Kensal Green station have both Bakerloo line and National Rail lines in the same location. Queen's Park Station sometimes has London Midland services stop at this location, travelling between London Euston and Birmingham New Street.
