The borough of Bromley is in the south east part of London. Its name has Anglo Saxon origins, coming from Bromleag which refers to a piece of land where Broom (a shrub) grew. Bromley is one of the largest of London's boroughs, and includes the areas of Penge, Orpington and Beckenham, as well as the town of Bromley itself. The borough was created in 1965, when the older boroughs of Beckenham and Bromley were amalgamated. At the same time, Bromley was given status as a Greater London district. Due to its origins as a separate village outside of London, Bromley has developed one of the largest business districts outside of the Central London area.
Bromley is thought to have its origins in an early Roman camp, with a natural spring known locally as Caesar's well. It has recently been suggested that the unplaced town of Noviomagus may have been located in the area. People may have already settled around the market town known as Bromley, which was first recorded in the 9th Century. One hundred years later, the Bishop of Rochester built a palace there. The Bishops lived in this Palace while visiting London until the nineteenth century, when Bromley Palace was sold to Coles Child. The town itself developed into a stopping place on the way to London, and it formed a vital link to the capital. Initially used as a stopping place for coaches, with the development of railways Bromley became an important site for railway workers, causing the northern half of the borough to become densely populated.
The borough has many places of interest to the visitor, as it has had several very famous residents over the years. H.G.Wells' birthplace is still there, although it now a shop. There is also an H.G. Wells Centre nearby. Charles Darwin was also born in the area. More modern history includes the famous Bromley Contingent, who were supporters of early punk rock. Many of the members of the contingent became starts themselves, including Adam Ant, Billy Idol, and Siouxsie Sioux. Bob Monkhouse was born in nearby Beckenham.
Beckenham, along with the town of Bromley, is one of the most important business centres in the Greater London area. It has many rail connections to the City, and this makes it very popular with bankers and financiers, who often live in the more leafy areas of Greater London. Beckenham's shopping centres around its High Street, with plenty of independent shops catering to the surrounding population.
