The City of London is a small borough within the wider London area. While once London City applied to all of the area, it now refers to just a small area in the centre of the capital. The City of London is still the financial and business centre of the country, with much of the political and international dealings of England being also focused upon this area. In this way, the City of London is still the most important part of the Greater London area.
There are several significant and famous areas of London which are united together as the City of London. Particularly Aldgate, which is home to many of the big insurance businesses, and is also the area where the Gherkin, a glass office building, can be seen. It is also in this area that the famous Battle of Cable Street occurred. The Queenhithe area is also noted, as it is the location for the Millennium Bridge.
The City of London is governed by the City of London Corporation. This controls the City, which is also known as the Square. The Corporation allows for the small area of the City to consider itself a borough, and for the controllers of the Corporation to hold the same powers as any other local authority. The only areas which the Corporation cannot manage is the Inner and Middle Temples, which are traditionally thought of as independent bodies.
Visitors to the City of London are often interested in looking at the many markets in the area, including Smithfield and Leadenhall markets. They might also wish to view famous financial buildings such as the London Stock Exchange, or the Bank of England. Along with these, there are other famous buildings, including St Pauls Cathedral. Although the Tower of London is not within the City's boundaries, many people come into the City borough to view the small sections of Roman wall visible in the area.
There are many ways to get around the City of London, although by far the best alternative is to use London Underground trains. While the City can be reached by using the roads, visitors travelling from other areas of the country can choose to enter through National Rail stations at Liverpool Street, Cannon Street, and London Bridge Station. They may also use the bus stations as Aldgate and Liverpool Street.
