About Hammersmith & Fulham
As part of Inner London, the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham has a number of areas which are dedicated to business and finance. It is also known for its football teams, and producing a number of sporting personnel. The borough of Hammersmith and Fulham contains not only the named towns, but also areas such as Shepherd's Bush, West Kensington, and White City.
The borough is well known for being the location of two premier league football clubs, Chelsea and Fulham, both originating in the Fulham area of the borough. Queens Park Rangers (QPR), which also has its origins in the borough, being founded in Shepherds Bush. It also has several sporting claims to fame, including being the birthplace of both Frank Bruno and Joe Calzaghi. Both Boxers were born in Hammersmith.
There are a number of interesting parks in the Hammersmith and Fulham borough, including the park known as Wormwood Scrubs. The prison is located to the west end of the park. The Scrubs themselves have been a duelling ground, a location for the Olympic Marathon, and a site of National importance, as home to the Common Pipistrelle Bat. Ravenscourt Park is another area of greenland within the borough, which contains a memorial to Giles Hart, one of the victims of the 7/7 London Bombings.
White City and nearby Shepherds Bush are both associated with the BBC and with large, sprawling areas to shop. White City has several centres, including the Westfield shopping centre, one of the largest urban shopping locations in Europe. There are smaller centres in Shepherds Bush, with Uxbridge road being an important source of small, independent shops and restaurants.
The borough is also notable for being the location of the Hammersmith Apollo, previously known as the Hammersmith Odeon. It is still known locally as the Hammy-O, but it was renamed after agreeing to a sponsorship deal with Labatts. In the 1990s it became a Grade II listed building. It has been a favoured location for many up and coming acts since the 1960s. The Hammersmith Apollo is known for its hosting of many famous names, including The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen. It has also been home to a number of other acts, including Eddie Izzard, who released his show there as Glorious.
