About Hampton
Hampton, London TW12, is a district along the North of the River Thames, and is in the Borough of Richmond Upon Thames. As with most of London, the district has its origins in Anglo-Saxon settlement along the river banks, and in this case the Saxon town of Hammton included the lands of Hampton Hill, Hampton Court, and Hampton Wick, which are known, like the Popular American summer destination, as The Hamptons. The area has remained populated since this time, and became a site for noble people to build houses during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as it was suburban enough to have interesting views from the houses, while close enough to London that the nobles could be called to court easily. This is the reason that Cardinal Wolsey chose to start building his palace at Hampton Court during the 1520s.
The Hampton district has been popular with the wealthy and noble for many centuries, and became a centre of culture after Henry VIII took possession of Hampton Court Palace, one of the most popular tourist sites. The Royal family took the palace as one of its London homes, and decorated it according to the tastes, so there is a wonderful mix of Tudor, Stuart and Georgian buildings and ornamentation in the many rooms of the Palace open to the public. The inside of the house, and the ornamental gardens which also host an annual flower show, can easily be visited by people living or staying in London.
Hampton district has also been named a few times in popular culture, being the site of the 'Hampton Races' in Nicholas Nickleby, referring to the horse racing area at the centre of Mousley Hurst. Charles Dickens also mentioned Hampton again in Oliver Twist, having Sykes and Oliver stop at Hampton during their journey to commit burglary. In the early twentieth century, Hampton district was mentioned by two very different writers, HG Wells and TS Eliot. The former mentions Hampton in passing during War of the Worlds, and TS Eliot names a Hampton public house in his book of Practical Cats.
Hampton district has a number of local amenities which bring people in from the surrounding areas. The area is popular for shopping, but it also has a heated open air swimming pool, which is one of the few pools still operating in Greater London. People often travel along the river, looking at the period buildings on either side of the bank, or journeying to the second largest park in London, Bushy Park.
