The borough of Hounslow was one of a number formed in the 1960s, and involved the merger of Brentford, part of Feltham, and Heston and Isleworth. It took its name Hounslow from the 13th century town at its heart. The borough has a number of districts, including that of Hounslow and Hounslow West, Isleworth, Feltham, Chiswick and Brentford. It is also known for its parks and greenlands, with much of the Metropolitan Green Belt lies in this borough.
The name Hounslow, like many names of London boroughs, has its origins in the Anglo-Saxon names for different towns. The name of Hounslow has been translated as Hunds Hlaw, or Hounds Barrow. This suggests that there is a burial place of a local leader there, or possibly there is a connection to Hundi, a pagan deity of the early Anglo-Saxons. Hounslow itself was a minor village, based around a small priory there, and did not grow until the Great West Road was built between Hounslow and London in the 1920s. From there, it has grown into a much larger community, partly affected by the closeness of Heathrow Airport. This proximity has lead to an increased number of hotels in the area, a number of which were originally office blocks, now converted to a new business interest.
In the borough, the area of land known as Hounslow Heath has a long history, and has been a place for military battles and preparations as far back as pre-Roman Britain. It was once much larger, and areas as far back as Feltham have found iron-age archaeology which relates to activity on Hounslow Heath.
The parks and open lands of the borough of Hounslow are often neglected by commentators, but there are many attractive areas within its boards. Syon House, formerly an Abbey and now home to the Duke of Northumberland, is situated within Syon Park, a very extensive garden which compliments Kew Gardens on the opposite side of the river. Chiswick House and Gardens, a mid eighteenth century palace, also has large gardens which inspired the English Landscape Movement, and has been inspiration for a number of famous gardens.
Many of the areas in the borough of Hounslow are residential, although there are also very familiar shopping locations, such as Chiswick. The High Road in this town features many different High Street shops, as well as restaurants and bars. It also has a large hotel industry. Hatton, also in the borough of Hounslow, features a number of small pubs, and the largest Urban Farm in the country.
