About Kennington
Kennington, London SE11, is a very densely populated district in South London, and was formerly a Royal Manor. It has many attractive buildings which contribute to its income from tourism, including The Oval, a major cricketing ground, and the Imperial War Museum. Due to the popularity of these venues, and the wealth that lies in the area, the population of Kennington, including the Prince's and Oval wards, is roughly 25,000 people. This is a significantly large population for the area, and demonstrates not only how popular the area is, but also relates to an ancient settlement which had its basis in Kennington.
Kennington is one of the few London districts that can trace their descent back to a period beyond the Anglo-Saxon settlements of 500-1000AD. In fact, there have been Tumulus and other significant features located which place Kennington firmly within the late neolithic and early Bronze age period, suggesting that it was already a sacred and well-known place. In the Doomsday census the land is held by Teodric, Goldsmith to the last Anglo-Saxon kings. The place has been traditionally associated with the royal family, with some suggesting that the name Kynnington may refer to it being held from the King, although it could also refer to Kenna, a local deity who gives her name to a few areas of London.
The royal associations of the district have lead many famous people to be linked to the site. The Black Prince, son of Edward III, was the first to build a royal palace. Geoffrey Chaucer, the famous medieval poet, was employed as Clerk of the Works at Kennington, being paid 2 shillings. Before her wedding to Arthur, Prince of Wales, Katherine of Aragon, later wife of Henry VIII, stayed in Kennington. This Henry went on to demolish most of Kennington Palace, using the stone and glass to create Whitehall. Although the palace is long since gone, the Royal family still hold the manor, and it is now in the possession of the Prince of Wales.
There are many things to see and do in Kennington, from the local parks, formerly common land which has been enclosed, to the Imperial War Museum. Other visitors choose to go to Kennington due to its association with Charlie Chaplin, who grew up in the district, or the writings of Feminist Maud Pember Reeves, who based her social history “Round About a Pound a Week” among the poor of Kennington.
