About Kensington & Chelsea
The borough of Kensington and Chelsea is found in the centre of London, and is considered to be one of the richest boroughs in England. The borough shares a border with the city of Westminster, which means that it shares some of its political and financial influence. It is also the site of a number of important tourist attractions, such as important museums and famous department stores. There are also international embassies, and expensive residential districts. It shares a number of its districts with Westminster.
Shopping in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea is expensive, as it is home to large department stores such as Harrods, Harvey Nichols, and Peter Jones. Kensington high Street is well known for being one of the main shopping streets in London, and is frequently brought to a standstill during the Christmas season. Portobello Road has appeared several times in films and books, as has the market. Another fashionable area is Sloane Street, which runs between Knightsbridge and Sloane Square. At the Knightsbridge end, it is considered to be as important as Bond Street in terms of shopping.
There are also a number of important tourist attractions, such as the Brompton Oratory, or the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was founded by a follower of John Henry Newman. At Earls Court, visitors can look into the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, which will be hosting part of the 2012 Olympics. It was also a popular location for musical venues, although these have lessened somewhat in recent years.
Kensington is perhaps best known for being the hub of London's Museums and Cultural Centres, including the Natural history Museum and the Science Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Saatchi Gallery as well as the Royal Albert Hall. The Natural History Museum is easily reached through the South Kensington underground station, and the other museums are a short walk away. Buses will also run along this area providing users with a good transport connection to these areas.
London Tube Transportation is also easily available for all of the major shopping areas, and busses will travel through the middle of Kensington High Street at regular intervals.
