About Kew

A district in the southern borough of Richmond upon Thames, Kew, London TW9, is perhaps most well known for being the site of Kew Gardens, the Royal Botanical Gardens as they are often called, which is a World Heritage Site due to the importance of the plants held within the area. The District also holds Kew Palace, a former Royal Home now part of Kew Gardens, and The National Archives, where the Domesday Book is on display, and where many people travel due to an increased interest in Family History. These sites make Kew a popular tourist destination, and as it is within easy access of the tube lines, there is a substantial industry in the area.

The buildings at Kew Palace are of significant interest to anyone who enjoys royal buildings, as there has been a palace in the area since at least the time of Elizabeth I, although it was not actually a royal home until much later. The second Palace at Kew was built around 1631, and stood for over 100 years, when Frederick, son of George II, leased the house. Frederick died before succeeding to the throne, but his son George III was very fond of Kew, and regularly lived there. He created a 'gothic' style castle on the place, which was disliked by almost everyone else, a dislike which saw it being neglected during the King's long illness, and it was finally demolished in 1828. Nevertheless, many buildings historians are fascinated by this period of Kew's history. The last palace was built from the remnants of an existing house within the grounds of the gothic castle. The last palace was in fact intended to be a modest residence while the castle was being constructed, and was the only thing standing after George III's building was demolished. In 1887 Queen Victoria gave this palace to the nation, to be used in Kew Gardens which was already being managed by the country.

The National Archives, which also stand in Kew, is in contrast a completely modern building. Originally a First World War hospital, it became a second home for the National Records. This situation continued, with half of the records being held at the Public Records Office, and the other at Kew, until 2008 when the Records Office was formally closed, and all of the public access records were moved to the National Archives at Kew, where they are accessible to the public.
