The borough of Kingston upon Thames is located at the southwest end of London, and is a Royal Borough. This latter title is ancient, being confirmed by a charter in 1927. The borough features a number of very high-price residential areas, including Seething Wells, Kingston Vale, Chessington, and New Malden. It also has connections to other high-ranking boroughs, including Richmond upon Thames.
The borough of Kingston upon Thames is noted due to its long-standing Royal connections. It was the chosen coronation place of many of the Anglo Saxon Wessex monarchs, including Edward the Elder (the heir of Alfred the Great), Athelstan, and Ethelred the Unready. It was heavily sacked by the Vikings during the latter reign, which may be why it ceased to be the Royal coronation site. Even the name of the town of Kingston suggests that it was a royal settlement, either a farm or a location of a great hall occupied by these Anglo Saxon Kings.
Other areas of the borough have more modern connections, including the well known Chessington theme park. This provides a great deal of the revenue for this part of the borough, and contains several different themes, including a Zoo area, a theme park, and a series of rides for younger children. It has recently started rebranding itself as a resort, along the lines of Disneyworld.
New Maldon, also in the borough, has a shopping and community centre which features a gym and a swimming pool. The High Street contains many shops, including the Tudor Williams department Store. The former cinema has become a retail centre with several different stores. Its older relative, Old Malden, has several conservation areas, and there are preservation orders on the Village Green, the Public House, the Saxon church of St John the Baptist and the Manor House.
Seething Wells is a site of some historical interest, being the side of the old Water Treatment works, which was built during the mid-nineteenth century on the site of some old springs. The old Seething Wells waterworks has been recently converted into Halls of Residence for students of nearby Kingston University. More tourism is generated by Richmond park, which is a rare slice of suburban greenery in the middle of the city.
Perhaps most importantly to Industry is the location of Hampton Court Palace and Grounds. This is open to the public, and can be reached either by walking through Kingston town, or by travelling up the Thames on the barge, as the Kings and Queens of the Palace would have entered.
