The borough of Lewisham is in the south east of greater London, and was formed from the amalgamation of Lewisham and Deptford metropolitan Boroughs. Although it is called the borough of Lewisham, the local authority is based in the town of Catford. Some of the areas which were originally held by Lewisham, such as the Royal Docks of Deptford, were handed over to other boroughs in time. The borough is connected to a number of other boroughs in the area, including Greenwich, Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Bromley.
There are a range of famous locations in Lewisham, including New Cross, Brockley, and Sydenham. Sydenham in particular has an interesting reputation, featuring famous names such as Shackleton the explorer, John Logie Baird, Jason Statham, and others including W.G. Grace, the famous cricketer. It gained more recent fame as there were sightings of a large black cat in the area, and one man was believed to have been attacked by it. Forest Hill, to the west of the borough of Lewisham, is well known for the Horniman Museum, which collects anthropological items. It also has an aquarium, and one of the best collections of instruments in the UK. Forest Hill is also the location of the Hob Pub, where acts such as Phil Jupitus and Mark Lamarr have played.
Telegraph Hill was one of the first signalling stations to be built in the late eighteenth century, and it was through this station that news of the battle of Waterloo was announced to London. it was fully developed in 1871, and the new houses were built in a villa style with wide streets lined with trees. The park at the bottom of Telegraph Hill is now open to the public, and it is also known for its entertainment, particularly the Telegraph Hill Festival.
Originally known as Hatcham, the town of New Cross in the north of the borough is a site which attracts many students. It is the location of Goldsmiths College, which now operates out of the former Town Hall. Catford, to the south, has some interesting relics of Brutalist architecture, although these are gradually being modernized. It is the famous site of the Catford cat, a large statue of a feline outside the Catford shopping centre. As an alternative to this, Brockley has many attractive open spaces, including the Ladywell Cemetery which is now a nature reserve, and Hilly Fields, which was saved from development by campaigners in the 1890s.
