Located in the South West area of London, the borough of Merton was named after a historic parish town which no longer exists, although an Oxford college also carries its name. The borough was created in 1965 by gathering together a number of different Municipal boroughs, including Mitcham, Wimbledon and Merton and Morden. All of these areas were traditionally located in Surrey, but have since become part of the Greater London Area.
The borough has a number of locations of interest, including Wimbledon, Morden, Mitcham and Pollards Hill. Morden is particularly interesting, as it once contained Stane Street, a Roman road which connected London and Chichester. It was also in royal hands during the Anglo-Saxon period, as Ethelstan the Prince, who died in 1015, left lands in the area of a local Abbey. It is also home to the Bait'ul Futuh Mosque, which is one of the largest mosques to be built in West Europe.
Mitcham is a site of some interest, as there was a Saxon graveyard in the area, one of the largest discoveries of its kind. It is also a suggested location for the Battle of Merton, where Ethelred of Wessex may have been killed or mortally wounded. Mitcham Court is an early Victorian home with a number of interesting features. It is now one of the centres of commerce in Merton. Pollards Hill is notable for its long rows of pollarded lime trees, which gives the hill its name.
Tourists might like Colliers Wood, which takes its name from a wood which previously stood there. It also held the remains of Merton priory, the walls of which were robbed out in order to build Nonsuch Palace. Few areas of wall remain. The priory is justly famous, as both Thomas Becket, the murdered Archbishop, and Nicholas Breakspear, the English pope, were educated in the priory.
Wimbledon, the famous site of the tennis championship, is located in the borough of Merton, and while the town around it have sometimes struggled to succeed, there have been recent changes which have improved the town. For example, the shopping centre, now named Centre Court to link into the tennis courts, gave some inspiration to high street stores. In the last decade, there have been some signs that the town is regenerating, and becoming a popular shopping centre, backed up by people coming to see the championship during the summer months.
