About New Malden

New Malden, London KT3, is one of the major shopping districts in the south-west area of London. It is mainly associated with the Borough of Kingston Upon Thames, but also has links to Merton. As Kingston and Surbiton towns are so near to New Malden, many of the students from Kingston University shop and work in the district. There are also affluent housing estates such as Coombe Hill, as well as Raynes Park. The inclusion of Motspur park, training ground for Fulham FC, within New Malden has also resulted in wealth and celebrity coming to the area.

New Malden is one of the districts which were founded by the creation or Railway links from the South to London. The New Malden train station was created in 1846, linking Waterloo station with the Southern parts of the country. As the railway gained popularity, homes were built around the north side, with a number of terraced houses for workers. Larger houses were built in the 1930s, but New Malden is also known as the home to Venners Ltd, makers of the first British parking meters, and has been home to one-time biggest stores for the B&Q, Currys and Tesco brands. The Currys store in particular was the largest store for electricals within London.

Although this up-and-coming district seems to be mostly interested in industry and money-making, there is also an interesting multi-cultural aspect to New Malden, because of the large Korean population in the area. This district has the largest community of South Korean expatriates in the whole of Europe, with the population in New Malden being estimated at around 20,000 Korean people, mostly found around Kingston Borough. Due to this interest, there are a larger number of Korean-culture shops, restaurants and cafes than anywhere else in London. There is also an Anglo-Korean cultural centre in the area, along with specialist Korean churches.

The reason that so many people of Korean descent have settled in the area is partly attributed to New Malden's association with the former South Korean Ambassador, who had his residence in the area. The first settlers moved into nearby Wimbledon, but they have now moved into New Malden. In addition to this cultural influence, a Korean conglomerate launched a joint venture with Racal Avionics in the same district, plus Samsung was also located in the area. This prompted many South Korean workers to move into the area, and other business and financial workers settled in this district to be close to family and community in New Malden.
