The district between Harlesden and Acton, known as Old Oak Common, London NW10, is a major centre of railway works between Inner London and Greater London. It is connected to the major lines from Paddington, including the Great Western Main Line and the New North Main Line. The former carried passengers to and from areas of Essex such as Slough, while the latter was mainly a freight train, with limited passenger movement through West Ruislip. This railway connection made Old Oak Common a hub of industry, and it is still used as a major rail and transport hub by London Transport.
The major site of this railway industry is focused upon the Railway Depot at Old Oak Common Train Maintenance Depot. This is the most utilized depot for keeping and maintaining railway engines, and carriages, which use the Paddington network. There are two different depot sites, known as OC for the diesel section, and OO for that portion which keeps carriages. This Depot bas been in use since the nineteenth century, and is still functioning to this day as one of the few depot sites in heavily built-up London.
The Old Oak Common district depot was once part of Great Western Railways steam locomotive depot, and visitors are still keen to view the buildings which remain from this era, particularly those along the canal. The site has been used since the 1970s to maintain freight engines, although it can also fix carriages from passenger trains. The existing buildings include the Pullman Car shed, which once maintained Blue Pullman trains, and a larger repair house known as the Factory. Although these buildings are of great interest, they have been compulsorily purchased in order to improve the London network, and are due to be demolished. The district is home to a number of self-storage businesses which may use part of the old depot, but there are also newer centres for storage which have been built in the last 20 years.
Alongside this depot, there is the newer High Speed Train Depot, which is used to maintain the Eurostar trains before they relocated to St Pancras. In fact, the depot no longer has regular servicing contracts, and instead relies upon hosting preserved locomotives from its Great Western past. This includes locomotives used for long-distance services, and turbo DMUs which were once used for commuters travelling to London, along with old Heathrow connection carriages and engines.
