The borough of Richmond upon Thames is the site of some of the richest districts in London. The borough is also well-known as the only borough to have areas on both sides of the River Thames. It has close links with Kingston Upon Thames, with whom it shares some areas, including Hampton Court park, part of the larger Hampton Court Palace complex which is in Kingston. Previous to the 1965 changes, the largest part of the borough was the Borough of Twickenham. It was only upon those changes that the name of the borough was altered to Richmond upon Thames.
There are many attractive parks in the borough of Richmond upon Thames. There is Hampton Court Park, which features a walled area called a deer park, and is home to the yearly Hampton Court Flower show organized by the Horticultural Society. It also features an ancient tree, known as the Medieval Oak and believed by some to be around 800 years old. There is also the Royal Botanic Gardens, known as Kew Gardens, consisting of some 121 hectares of glasses and gardens, Richmond Park, which contains many buildings such as the Royal Ballet School and the Thatched House Lodge. King Henry VIII's mound, also in Richmond park, has a protected view of St Pauls Cathedral. This area was once possibly a barrow or grave mound.
Twickenham, as well as being well known for rugby, has many attractive spots, particularly St Margarets, which is known for its range of different shops and restaurants. This area was once Twickenham Park, the home of Francis Bacon the scientist and philosopher. Twickenham also contains the Royal Military School of Music. Nearby Strawberry Hill is one of the most affluent areas in the Borough of Richmond upon Thames, and is also home to the gothic castle which was built by Hugh Walpole in the 18th century which was restored and reopened in the last few years.
Mortlake is another significant area, once home to Elizabeth I's magician and astrologer, John Dee. The nearby cemetery also holds the tent-shaped tomb of Richard Burton and his wife Isabel. Tommy Cooper's ashes also lie in this cemetery. Nearby Teddington has also had some interesting experiences, with the development of the Teddington film studios. It is also the location of some chain stores. As with most locations in the borough, these places are primarily residential, with only occasional shopping centres or business areas between large areas of housing.
