The district of Streatham, London SW16, can be found inside the district of Lambeth, and has been settled since the Roman period. The name Streatham (usually pronounced Stret-am) is believed to refer to the Roman road between London and Brighton, possibly leading to a Roman settlement known as 'Novus Portus', which is now no longer identifiable. Even after the Romans left, the Anglo-Saxon settlers used this road as a major trackway, and it eventually became an important coaching road between London and Croydon, moving towards Lewes, later converted into the A23, being still used to this day. It is due to this major routeway, from Roman London onwards, that Streatham has had such an important role in the City's life.
The first parish church was founded in Streatham in the Saxon period, although this church, St Leonard's, is now lost beneath later rebuilding. After the Norman Conquest Streatham became part of the property of a Norman Abbey, which kept it virtually unchanged for centuries. Only in the late eighteenth century, when spas developed around the local springs, Streatham Wells. This encouraged movement into the area, leading to turnpike and toll roads, and also wealthy merchants, bankers and nobles settled around the spas.
These establishments are almost gone, although Streatham park is sited upon the ruins of a Georgian country home sometimes called Streatham Palace. This palace was the home of many literary people, due to Henry Thrale's wife Hester, who was good friends with Samuel Johnson, and also entertained Joshua Reynolds. The palace fell into repair and was demolished during the 1860s. Although there are some homes which still survive, such as home of the Tate family in Park Hill, most of the large country houses which once marked out Streatham have been knocked down.
Urbanization of the district came with the building of rail connections to and from London. Streatham quickly became a popular entertainment location, known as the “west end of South London”. Apartment blocks were quickly built to accommodate people working in the ballrooms and cinemas, and were popularized during waves of immigration from people fleeing Nazi Germany. As with many areas in London, the district fell out of favour, going from being one of the largest shopping districts in the area to only having a few supermarkets, with general urban decay of the area. The biggest industry is probably self-storage parks, but there has been some investment into regeneration and social projects in the district.
