About Sutton
The borough of Sutton is in the South west area of London, and is part of the sprawling city known as Outer London. It has a large area, around 17 square miles, and is considered to be one of the largest boroughs in England. It is also one of the furthest south of London Boroughs, having borders with only Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, and Merton. It is one of the few Boroughs of London not to have a single Underground Station within its borders. It also has few links with overground networks, and its main links to London are through buses and cars.
There are a number of districts in the borough of Sutton, but not many of these are familiar. As Sutton is so isolated from other parts of London, many tourists may not even realise that it is there at all. Perhaps the most well known town in Sutton is Cheam, which has a number of interesting places, including Nonsuch mansion, which was built around 1802. Nonsuch mansion is located in the park of the same name, which shares its authority between Sutton and Epsom. The only other real interest in the town is that Hancock's Half Hour used the fictional location of Railway Cuttings, East Cheam as the background to the show.
Worcester Park is noted as the location of a ruined mansion which gradually disappeared beneath the soil of the town, being now almost invisible. It is commonly believed that the house was known either as Worcester House, or Worcester Park House. It is understood that these are the ruins of a large house built during the early 17th Century by the Earl of Worcester, but memories of the house before it burned down in 1948 are few, and what remains there were are probably now lost.
Sutton town itself has many attractive features, including two shopping centres, which are both on the High Street. The street itself is also home to a number of smaller shops, as well as a Morrisons and an Asda. Late at night, there are a number of clubs, and future Tube links to the City of London could help increase the number of venues in this area. Sutton also has a number of attractive green areas in the centre of town, one being Manor Park, and the other Sutton Green, the latter probably the local town green before Sutton became part of London.
