About Tooting
Found in the Borough of Wandsworth, Tooting, London SW17, is an ancient settlement, which has been used since before the Anglo-Saxon invasions. There is some dispute about the name, experts uncertain whether the name refers to people of Tota, a deity or Chieftain, or the People of a Tout, referring to a watchtower. The latter could be more likely, as the Romans had already built a road here, forming part of Stane Street leading to modern Chichester. The land may once have been settled by Vikings during the Anglo-Saxon period, although the lands had been granted to Chertsey Abbey. Although divided into two distinct areas during the Norman Period, with Tooting Graveney being held by the De Gravenel family, and Tooting Bec being part of the lands owned Hellouin Bec Abbey in Normandy. The district was treated as manor land, being mainly used for farming and market gardens until the end of the 19th century.
The reason that Tooting district is well-known throughout the world is due to its appearance in 'citizen smith', a popular comedy series based around the doings of the socialist Tooting Popular Front. The program was based in Tooting, and often featured the shout of “Freedom for Tooting”. There are other comedy references to Tooting, but none has had the impact of Citizen Smith. In addition to television, many song writers have referenced Tooting, particularly the group “Kitchens of Distinction”, who recorded a song “On Tooting Broadway Station” as part of their 1992 album.
Tooting is also home to Tooting Bec Common, and the Tooting Bec Lido, the largest swimming pool in the UK. It was designed to be concealed from people on the common by the use of earth ramps, in order not to spoil the natural beauty of the area. The lido was originally begun in the early years of the 1900s, and started as a project for local men who were unemployed. In the beginning, women and girls were only allowed to use the Lido once a week, in the morning, in order to keep the sexes separated. As recently as 1931 mixed bathing was only allowed at certain times. The Lido has suffered some downturn in recent years, with Wandsworth council considering closing the pool in the 1990s, but it has recently been improved thanks to private investments. The lido is situated among the Tooting Commons, areas of public land in the district which also includes Tooting Bec Stadium.
