The borough of Tower Hamlets shares a border with the City of London, but it also covers much of the traditional East End of London. Although areas of it have been redeveloped in recent years, including the former docks, it still has a large numbers of immigrants, as has been the case in the East End of London for over 200 years. The modern borough of Tower Hamlets includes not only those areas which were previously under the jurisdiction of the Constable of the Tower of London, but also large parts of Bethnal Green, Stepney, Limehouse and Poplar.
The borough does contain a number of important landmarks, particularly the Tower of London to the South. This provides a good income to the borough, and attracts many tourists to the area. In the East End, Spitalfields Christ Church overlooks Brick Lane, and these two locations, combined with Spitalfields market, are also tourist attractions. The culture of Bengal has encouraged many restaurants serving curry houses along Brick Lane, and it is also home to a yearly art exhibition, with many of the former factories turned into galleries for the occasion.
The Christ Church in Spitalfields is one of the many religious buildings designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. This church, finished in 1729, is one of the few remaining churches built to Hawksmoor's design, and is a very awe inspiring building. It was restored in 1960, and cleaned in the 1990s, so that the astonishing whiteness of the Church could be seen. it towers over the nearby Spitalfields Market, which had been renovated in 1991 to take in a number of shops, and to allow arts and crafts to be sold to an increasingly large tourist market.
