More familiar now as a make of car, Vauxhall is a famous district in the Inner City of London SW8, part of the Borough of Lambeth. The name of the district comes from a friend of King John who built a large house there, known as Faulk's Hall, or Vauxhall. Although this is now the popular name for the district, in fact for many years it was known as 'la Sale Faulkes', and formed a minor part of the large manor of Lambeth. It is only in the nineteenth century, when Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens were created, that the name of the district became familiar as Vauxhall. The presence of the Pleasure Gardens was pernicious, with the Russian word for a central city railway station becoming Voksal – a phonetic transliteration of Vauxhall.
The district was mainly ignored until pressure from the expansion of London caused it to become occupied in the 18th century. The main reason for this was that Vauxhall consisted of flat, marshy land which was poorly drained, making it unsuitable for occupation or farming, although some areas of the land had been drained to create market gardens. By the middle of the 19th century, Vauxhall village had become combined with the town of Lambeth, although it retained a village-like feel until bombing, railway building and poor street planning destroyed the former feel of the district.
Although the main attraction for visitors to Vauxhall for many years was the Pleasure Gardens, these were eventually destroyed by urbanization, and not much of the original Vauxhall gardens now remain. It had been open since the 1660s, but after 1839 was auctioned off, due to the bankruptcy of the then owners. It opened briefly, but was finally closed in 1859, with the land sold to architects and masters of the construction industry, with only a small area known as Spring Gardens left of the original Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Instead, visitors are more likely to be familiar with the district as the site of the MI6 building, made famous through the James Bond films.
Those who have an interest in history might wish to see the Georgian mansion called Brunswick House, which was once home to the German Dukes of Brunswick. It had previously had its own estate, which has now been built over by the council, although the house itself has been restored to its former glory by the London Architectural Salvage and Supply company, who have opened the building to members of the public.
