About West Norwood

A district of the Borough of Lambeth, West Norwood, London SE27, contains many of the familiar features of the district, including Knights Hill and Thurlow Park. The district contains a number of residential areas, although there is a tradition of industry in the southern areas. It sits alongside other districts of Lambeth, including Streatham, all of which are primarily areas of residence. The district is known for its private schools, including the foundation of Elmgreen school which is partially funded by the Government. It also has a number of centres for those with learning disabilities, including part of the L'Arche Lambeth, founded by Therese Vanier and intended to provide care homes and residential workshops for those with learning difficulties.

West Norwood was, for many years, known as Lower Norwood, which involved dividing London's Great North Wood into several different enclosures. The land which was gained was given to the Archbishop of Canterbury at the South, and to Lord Thurlow at the north end. In earlier years, there had been several taverns in the area which were associated with woodland. Almost all of the Wood was destroyed by the enclosure acts of the 1790s, which effectively created Norwood district. Alongside the cutting up of the wood, new churches, High Streets and workers' cottages were built, with the intention of creating farming land in the area. However, within a century of the enclosure, West Norwood had become a densely populated area, with many of the large estate houses being removed in order to fit in smaller terraced houses.

Despite the intentions of creating a small shopping village in the West Norwood district, in fact this never occurred, with most of the district's shopping areas being located along Norwood Road leading down to Herne Hill. This situation was not improved by the problem of Second World War bomb damage, which decimated the areas around West Norwood railway station. Many of the current residential estates were built to house people who had lost their homes during the War.

The land known as Knights Hill was owned by Thomas Knyght in the 16th century, and was a part of the original Lambeth Manor. Part of this land was gained by Lord Thurlow in the Enclosure acts, and later formed the basis for the residential estate, named for the original owner of the land. One of the biggest local landmarks in the area is West Norwood Cemetery, one of the so-called 'Magnificent Seven' Victorian cemeteries in London. Famous artists and entertainers are buried there.
