About Wimbledon

A district in the South West of London SW19 & SW20, Wimbledon is well known as the home of the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament, although it also has a second popularity as the area of Wimbledon Common, home to the Wombles, and also one of the settings for Martian invasion in the War of the Worlds. The district is home to a number of sporting and recreational areas which make it a popular location for people during bank holidays and summer weekends.

The beginning of Wimbledon goes back to at least the middle of the iron age, when a hill fort on the Common was constructed. In later years, as part of the manor of Mortlake, Wimbledon traded hands many times, and large houses were built around the common. The village never really grew until the beginning of the industrial era, despite the activity of the wealthy, but in the eighteenth century it was one of the stopping places on the journey to London from Portsmouth and the Hampshire area. This stagecoach road became converted into a station, built slightly away from the rest of the village and encouraging further growth. The Duchess of Marlborough, who died in 1744, granted land the land to her grandson, the future first Earl Spencer. Wimbledon Park House was built in the Regency period by the Earls Spencer, but the common was left relatively untouched by these buildings and others.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the district became part of the Borough of Wimbledon, in the county of Surrey. Increasing residential expansion caused many older inhabitants of the district to move into neighbouring lands such as Morden. During the Second World War many parts of Wimbledon were damaged, and afterwards there was a great deal of renovation, with many larger houses being converted into flats, and council estates being built on parts of Wimbledon Park.

Although Wimbledon had been wealthy and heavily populated, its shops never competed significantly with the centres at Kingston, Richmond and Sutton. There were no large shops designed to bring in customers, and this lead to a large amount of decay in the town centre. In recent years, with the increasing popularity of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, and other sporting events such as Wimbledon Football Club (AFC Wimbledon), the council has developed land near the High Street into The Centre Court shopping centre, designed to provide interesting shopping experiences for visitors to the district.
