It’s new feature time. And there’s no more worthy topic than the unusual items, superstar customers, exceptional entrepreneurs and iconic objects that are, have been in, or used storage in one of our stores.
Now you’ll might know that ABC Selfstore started life in Camden in 1993. In fact our York Way store was one of London’s very first self storage facilities. So with over 20 years of industry experience there’s a lot to reminisce about. But with so much helpful storage under our belt – where should we start? Well, how about some good business…
A Business that rose like a… Phoenix
Back in 1995 we opened our Wandsworth branch on the Wandsworth industrial estate off of Garrett Lane. Around about the same time 3 mum’s from the borough were starting a greetings card business. Known as Phoenix Trading they operated out of a bijou office at one of their homes.
Now you know how we’re always banging on about how a storage unit with us is a great place to keep stock? Well here’s an example of exactly that. As the business grew the cards were stacking up – under children’s beds – and in any other spare space they could find around their houses.
Which is when we came in, or rather they came in to our reception.
Storage, with Wings
It’s not just small start ups that can benefit from our flexible storage facilities. An instantly recognisable customer that has rented a unit is the most bovine of Energy Drink companies. Our Southwark facility was a temporary home to their extensive marketing paraphernalia during the nougthies. That even included a car with a huge mock can on the back.
Riding the Storage Train
Frankie Goes to Hollywood front man (and successful solo artist in his own right) Holly Johnson used ABC Selfstore to keep some of his extravagant stage costumes safe and secure. Children of the 80s will remember the 1984 pop-phenomenon that saw the songs Relax and Two Tribes locking out the top two spots on the UK Chart. But Holly’s raunchy S&M outfits were seen as risqué at the time and the bands’ Relax video was banned by the BBC. How times have changed, in 2015 we’ve got a blockbuster movie about the same topic.
Our Wandsworth branch is also home to some rather decent bottled organic beer. Not the sort of Duff stuff that one Homer J Simpson might be seen necking whilst couch potatoing in front of the TV – no, this one is a quality brew. The kind of beverage you might enjoy reclined on your just-moved-out-of -storage patio furniture now spring is starting to get into her seasonal stride.
We’ll be back soon with part 2 – when we’ll take a look at some sterling charities that we’re proud to say use our storage facilities.
