About Camberwell

View of Bermondsey, London

Standing proud as the proverbial peacock in the London Borough of Southwark, Camberwell is an area of South London on the up and up.

Although its exact origins aren't incredibly clear, some say that the area's name derives from the term 'Cripple Well'. This name refers to a settlement that developed as a hamlet where people from the City of London were taken when they had life-threatening diseases including leprosy, for treatment by the church and the clean, healing waters from the wells. Not only this, but the area also has a butterfly named after it - the majestic Camberwell Beauty. Pretty cool, huh?

Camberwell lies around 2.7 miles south of Charing Cross, and according to TFL, it takes around 33 minutes to reach Tottenham Court Road via a combination of bus and underground services. Although Camberwell doesn't have its own underground station, it is served by nearby Kennington as well as a host of bus routes serving most major parts of the city.

For medical purposes, Camberwell is accessible to three well-regarded NHS hospitals', serving a wide area. These hospitals are King's College, St Thomas' and Guys.

The average rental price for a property in Camberwell is £422 per week, with an overall rental range of £288 to £500 per week. The majority of properties available in the area are two-bedroom flats which fetch an average of £450 per week.
