Found in the Southernmost part of London, the borough of Croydon is one of the largest of the London Boroughs. The borough kept its powerful influence beyond the Norman Conquest, becoming the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury during the early years. It was later visited by many members of the Royal Family. It remained a small town outside of London influence until the invention of the railways, when it became an important stopping-off place on the route to and from London.
Croydon town is known as an important district for aviation fans, since it played an important role in both the first and second world wars. During the first world war, it contained an airfield used to battle Zeppelins, and later became home to British Airways. It also suffered serious damage during the second world war. As well as the town of Croydon, Purley, another ward in the area, has its own important history as the site of an important fighter station during the second world war.
Since the end of the Second World War, Croydon has mainly relied upon retail outlets for its economy, and it has remained the case even into the 21st Century. Purley Way is a shopping area which is popular with most residents of South London. Originally the site of Croydon airport, it later became a location for more shops, including a large IKEA store, and the Croydon B power Station. Purley Way was home to the first ever PC World store. In Central Croydon Town, the North End is a popular shopping destination, containing many stores including Marks and Spenser, Allders, and the House of Fraser. The Town Centre is also home to the Surrey Street Market, which is often seen in TV footage.
