The borough of Lambeth is one of the longest and thinnest of the boroughs, and is located at the centre of the city, close to the City of London and parts of North London. It was originally intended that Lambeth should combine with its neighbour Southwark, but this was roundly opposed by both boroughs, and finally some parts of other boroughs were combined to make the new borough of Lambeth. This has a number of very different districts, ranging from Brixton and Streatham to Clapham, then on to South Bank, Herne Hill and Kennington, along with Vauxhall and Lambeth itself.
The main tourist attractions in the area are located in the South Bank area. This has a number of museums and art galleries which attract visitors, including the Royal Festival Hall and the National Theatre. Further along the river boundary is the London Eye, and Lambeth Palace. Herne Hill is the location of a number of interesting independent shops and Grade II listed buildings, as well as the Herne Hill velodrome, which was once the home to Crystal Palace.
Kennington also has a range of interesting locations, from the Imperial War Museum at the North side of Kennington to the former Roman road of Stane Street. There are also more modern entertainments, such as the Oval, which is the location for Test Matches during the Summer. This site is also associated with Rugby union history, as the first international match between England and Scotland Union players was held here. Kennington also has a large Park, which is one of the rare patches of green which are occasionally found in the middle of London.
Streatham is a popular location for people visiting the late night areas of the West End, due to its good transport connections with the area. It also has a connection to the magician Aleister Crowley, who spent some years here in the 1880s. Clapham, not far away, has been recently regenerated, and now has some large shopping centres, restaurants and cafes which make this area increasingly attractive to students and shoppers.
Perhaps one of the most relevant tourist locations is Crystal Palace, once home to the palace built to house the Great Exhibition. The park on which the glass dome stood is still in existence, and it is known for its many artistic and recreational grounds. It was the original home to Crystal Palace football club, but this moved away in the early 20th century.
