About Stockwell

Stockwell district is found in the Borough of Lambeth, being located around Inner London, SW8 & SW9, just south-west of the river. It has a number of close neighbours, including Brixton, Kennington and Vauxhall. Although it has been named as one of the poorest neighbourhoods in London, it has received a lot of funding in recent years that have caused it to flourish. Investment due to its proximity with Central London, and a multi-cultural atmosphere that attracts interest, have both added to the public's reasons for visiting this area, bringing it back into popular awareness, and making it an easy place to visit on a day trip.

Stockwell is likely to have been settled in the Anglo-Saxon period, with its name referring to a tree truck or fence post which would have been a boundary marker. For many years it was a manor separated from London by fields. There were a large number of market gardens, as well as John Tradescant's botanical gardens. Called the 'Ark', these gardens were dedicated to introducing plant species into England. Sadly, this garden was built upon during improvements in the nineteenth century, and nothing now remains of Tradescant's garden.

The nineteenth century saw Stockwell's importance rise, as many wanted to live in the rural area. Famous people such as Arthur Rackham lived in the district for many years, but this was the best period for Stockwell, with conditions deteriorating at the beginning of the 20th Century. After being extensively bombed during the Second World War, large areas of Stockwell were taken up with social housing.

Stockwell has a large multi-cultural population, part of the district being located in Little Portugal, where there is a large Portuguese population. Many of these expatriates come from Lisbon and Madeira, and have created many restaurants, delicatessens and cafés which have Portuguese specialities which attract tourists. There are also large communities of West African immigrants who have also established specialist eateries, grocers and salons designed to maintain the West African influence.

Due to its proximity to the Inner city of London, Stockwell has long been associated with artists and actors. Vincent Van Gogh lived in this area during his stay in London, writers such as Will Self have also lived in the district, and musicians like Jerry Dammers (of the Specials) and Roots Manuva have also lived there. Most famously, perhaps, Roger Moore once lived in Stockwell.
