About Wandsworth

The borough of Wandsworth is located in the south of the city, near to the borough of Lambeth. The metropolitan borough of Wandsworth previously contained Clapham and Streatham, but these were both taken on by Lambeth during the 1965 alterations. As well as bordering Lambeth, Wandsworth also touches the boroughs of Richmond upon Thames, and Merton. Across the River it faces the three boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, and the City of Westminster. It also hosts the Clapham Junction Station, which is found in Battersea, and not in Clapham as might be expected.

Wandsworth plays host to a number of different parks, including the famous Clapham Common. This area used to be common (or grazing) land held jointly between Battersea and Clapham, but this area was converted into a park in the 1870s. The common is jointly managed between Wandsworth and Lambeth, It contains a number of ponds, which are historical pools of water. It is around this Common that the Clapham Sect of religious reformers, including Henry Thornton, lived. Tooting Bec Common was also once part of the common land, and once belonged to the Bec Abbey in Normandy. Battersea Park is home to the Peace Pagoda, built in 1985, and echoing the pagoda in Milton Keynes, built 5 years earlier.

Places such as Tooting, whose Anglo-Saxon name suggest that there was a watch-post at the location, are largely residential areas, with few business or cultural locations nearby. Tooting has been mentioned in the series Citizen Smith, were the lead character was a member of the Tooting Popular Front. Only the Battersea area has much distinction, being the site of the New Covent Garden Market (moved to Battersea in 1974). It also features the Battersea power station and the Cat and Dogs Home. Other locations include the famous Northcote Road, which is a large shopping district at the centre of Nappy Valley, so called due to the number of young and affluent young people who live there.

Wandsworth itself is also an interesting location, although very expensive, with some homes fetching over £1 million pounds. These homes are sought after due to their prime location, and attractive Victorian features. While many of the older features of Wandsworth village have now disappeared behind large tower blocks and council Estates, there are still some attractive features, such as the Church of St Annes, and the Southside Shopping Centre, more often known by its former name, the Arndale Centre.

Everyone I dealt with there was very warm, polite and helpful. Unit was very clean, process from renting to cancelling was simple. Couldn’t fault a thing. I would also like to add that I am very hard to please so my comments should be taken seriously 🙂
