Our quick-fire guide to well organised storage that will help you make the most of your unit and avoid mishaps.
These tips are a route to well organised storage that will help you make the most of your unit and avoid mishaps.
Remove all perishable and inflammable items like food, aerosols, batteries and oil/petrol for safety reasons you cannot store these in your unit.
Make sure your goods are dry and clean before you put them into store. Drain and wipe down freezers, refrigerators and washing machines and leave the door ajar for ventilation. Give gardening tools a good clean.
Plan Your Unit:
Plan your storage. Leave items you want to access more frequently until last so they are at the front.
Pack your property into good quality plastic or cardboard storage boxes. We sell everything you might need in the ABC Selfstore shop.
Label or number boxes for easy reference and keep a record of what you have stored. Trust us on this one - you'll save more time in the long run if you know what's where.
Fill storage boxes to to a safe lift-able weight. If they are not full use soft padding or bubble wrap to fill the spare space. Partially full or bulging boxes are more prone to crushing, tipping or damage.
Pack heavier items like files and books in smaller boxes so you can lift them without risking injury.
Remember, lift heavy items correctly: bend your knees not your back. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guide called Getting to Grips with Manual Handling might be helpful. It includes advice (pages 7 & 8) on Good handling techniques for lifting and Good handling technique for pushing and pulling. You can read it here.
If you can't avoid storing heavy boxes or objects - label them as heavy.
Using our pallets trucks, cages or trolleys to move heavy bulky items in the unit first to create a sturdy base; put the lighter items on top.
Position boxes and items of similar size together to minimise wastage of space.
Leave space for access to the rear of the unit and avoid leaning things against walls to help ventilation.
Protect fragile items with bubble wrap, mark the box 'Fragile' and avoid putting heavy items on top.
Use wardrobe boxes to keep clothes on hangers and in in shape.
Dismantle furniture where possible, detach legs from tables and beds to save space and wrap the legs in bubble wrap to avoid damage.
Place dust sheets or protective covering over soft furnishings.
Stand mattresses on end and avoid stacking heavy items on soft furnishings.
Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth, paper or bubble wrap in between.
Use dust sheets to cover your property and on the floor of the storage unit.
Use furniture covers or dust sheets between surfaces to protect from scratches.
