GOING FOR GOLD – THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER BRITISH SPORTING MEMORABILIA

British sports are awash with great sporting achievements; over the years we Brits have had so many triumphs worth celebrating.  Whether it’s your school’s athletics cup, a special achievement trophy or school sports shirt people rightfully don’t want to let them go.

Other than items with high sentimental value, here we have listed what we think are the top five sporting items that anyone would love to have tucked away in their self storage unit.

5.  Frank Bruno’s Boxing Gloves from Heavyweight Title win.

One of the most loved and respected British boxers of all time, Frank Bruno finally realised his dream at the 4th time of asking when he won the WBO Heavyweight Title from American Oliver McCall in September 1995.

He had fallen short three times at world title level, after two defeats by the then-ferocious Mike Tyson and once in the ‘Battle of Britain’ against former undisputed champion Lennox Lewis.

But after 12 gruelling rounds Bruno prevailed, in an unforgettable night at Wembley. The gloves will be worth thousands easily, if taken care of in the 16 years since.

Know what I mean ‘arry?

4.  Sir Steve Redgrave’s Gold Medal from 5th Olympic Win in a row

The English rower made history at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, as he triumphed for the fifth consecutive games.

The result has seen him hailed as one of Britain’s greatest ever Olympian’s, being only the fourth athlete to achieve this. But what would you give to have his gold medal from this day?

An Olympic Gold Medal is special enough, but the fact it was his fifth in a row makes the medal a must-have collector’s item.  It’s not something you can go shouting about either, it should be protected an stored away like treasure.  We have just the safe spot for it, at ABC Selfstore.

3.  Lewis Hamilton’s McClaren Formula 1 car from World Title win

Lewis Hamilton made history in 2008, when he became the youngest Formula One world champion pipping Felipe Massa by a single point.

It was only the Londoner’s second season in the sport, when he became the first British driver to secure a world title since Damon Hill in 1996. Hamilton was complimentary of his team in the aftermath, and his McClaren-Mercedes car.

Now that would be a souvenir and a half, having Lewis Hamilton’s world title winning F1 car, but where would you keep it? It’s not really the motor you can keep on your drive seven days a week, and this is where ABC Selfstore can help.  When we say we store anything, we mean anything.

2.  Jonny Wilkinson’s Boots from the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final

It was Wilkinson’s dramatic drop goal in extra time which finally saw off Australia in the Rugby World Cup Final, and won England their first piece of significant World Cup silverware since Bobby Moore’s men triumphed in 1966 in football.

When England win trophies, they usually do it the hard way, and here was no different with 25 seconds left on the clock as Wilkinson struck.

It’s almost certain that the player himself probably keeps his Adidas boots which he wore in the final under lock and key, or in storage.  The mind boggles to the amount that those boots could raise at an auction but some things are just too hard to part with.

1.  Bobby Moore’s England shirt from the 1966 World Cup Final.

The pride, the passion, the three lions and of course the captain, all of these images recall the magical moment Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup, for the first and only time in the country’s history.

The shirt worn by Bobby Moore in the 4-2 win over Germany at Wembley was sold at auction in 1999 for £44,000, but what would it be worth now?

A ‘spare’ shirt which Moore supposedly handed to Physio Harold Shepherdson is said to be worth over £50,000. But what would you do with the shirt? Store it away of course; such precious memorabilia should be treated like gold dust and that’s where ABC Self Storage comes in. So if you’re lucky enough to have this collector’s item, there’s really only one place to store it and store it safely.

So there’s just our top 5 British sporting memorabilia, but I’m sure there’s plenty more you could add to this list or maybe even want storing away for safe keeping.
