As the rain continues to streak down our window panes and the temperatures struggle to reach into the teens, we might do well to remember the old English proverb – “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out” (basically don’t put your winter clothes away until the end of May).
With 2012 being crowned England’s wettest year on record and the second wettest for the UK, perhaps it was too much to hope for an improvement in 2013. Needless to say, the pattern for this year so far has been one of prolonged cold and wet and, whilst we ought not to forget the reprieve and glorious weather around the early May Bank Holiday, it’s all too quickly back to the wintry hail, sleet and high winds that many parts of the country are experiencing this week.
In a ‘normal’ year, most of us eagerly anticipate the onset of spring and enjoy heading to our storage units to dig out our summer clothes and to once again lock up our warm woollies. However, with this year’s unseasonal and changeable weather, it may be a few weeks yet before we’re able to swap our wardrobes.
So when’s it all going to warm up? Perhaps we should turn to the three ‘Ice Saints’ of European folklore – St Mamertus, St Pancras and St Servatius – for their guidance? With their feast days on May 11th, 12th and 13th respectively, tradition suggests that these days bring cold weather but also hopefully the last frost of the year. So, perhaps now we’re past this chilly trio’s commemorative days, perhaps we can look forward for a bit of warmer weather.
Until it warms up, here at ABC Selfstore we’re happy to keep all your summer clothes and other items carefully stored away in any of our self storage facilities in Wandsworth, Camden or Southwark until they are needed.
