Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday as it is more traditionally known, always falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent which, as most of you already know, is the 26th not many of us know much about the history behind the day, so here it is…

Centuries ago, it was considered important for people who had moved away from the parish where they grew up to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year.

So each year, in the middle of Lent, everyone would travel to visit the main church or cathedral of the area. Most historians think that it was this pilgrimage back to the mother church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family.

Today, it is still a day for family reunions when children give presents, flowers and home-made cards to their mother as a ‘thank you’ and a way of making her feel special.

So, how will you make your mother feel special this Mother’s Day? Perhaps you will surprise her with breakfast in bed, take her out for lunch or go for a stroll in the countryside.

Whatever you plan, what mothers across the country would undoubtedly appreciate beyond anything else is a break from the daily chores; the cooking and washing up, the laundry and the tidying.

Why not give your mother a fabulous present this year by taking over the household chores for the day? Perhaps you could team up with brothers and sisters to make sure the decks are cleared of clutter to make space for a really enjoyable family day.

Clearing the space will brighten the home and help create a cleaner more spacious feel at home which is sure to put a smile on your mother’s face. If you’ve left home, why not clear out the spare room and invite your mother over for a special weekend of pampering fun?
