Making a Marathon Effort

With the marathon season now upon us, many of us are looking forward to the great spectacle which is the London Marathon this weekend. Whether taking part or cheering from the side lines, it’s a fantastic event which raises an enormous amount of money for a whole range of different charities and highlights some inspirational stories of those taking part.

The name ‘marathon’ originates from the legend of Pheidippides, who in 490BC was said to have run from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, a distance of 24.8 miles, to announce the victory of the Greeks over the Persians. Unfortunately, Pheidippides was so exhausted that he collapsed and died!

Today’s race of 26.2 miles dates back to the 1908 London Olympics. It is said that the original distance was extended to enable members of the royal family to watch the start of the race from the East Terrace at Windsor Castle and the end of it from the royal box in the Olympic stadium at White City.

People run marathons for a whole host of different and personal reasons – for charity, to get fit, or just for the buzz that come from completing the race. Whatever the reason, completing the run is an arduous task. However, if you don’t plan and prepare, commit to training and eat properly, the chances are you might not succeed and it could be a painful experience.

Pounding the streets of London or training on various pieces of gym equipment forms a significant part of any training. But gym membership can be expensive and finding space for the cross-trainer, rowing machine, roll mats, dumbbells and other equipment can place an enormous strain on the space in our homes – and the marital relationship!

Perhaps that’s why, at ABC Selfstore, we are seeing an increasing number of people setting up gyms in our self storage units in Camden, Wandsworth and Southwark. With private, affordable space in a range of sizes to suit personal needs, it’s a trend that’s definitely on an upward curve.

For all those taking part in the marathon this weekend, good luck from the team at ABC Selfstore – we will certainly be cheering from our self-storage facilities in Southwark as you run by. And for those of you who have been put off the fitness challenge due to expensive gym memberships and space constraints at home, we might just have the solution you’ve been looking for.

A special mention to our friends Anthony Nolan who are official sponsors of the 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon and CoppaFeel’s #TeamBoobs who have already raised an amazing 10k.
