Make the Most of Your Spare Room

Most spare rooms remain unused for the majority of the time, so why not transform the room into a multipurpose space that’s still practical for overnight visitors? There are plenty of ways to make the most of a spare room, such as a home office, dressing room or even a kid’s playroom.

Before you start the transformation, it’s important to weigh up each option and consider what you need for the room and what you’ll get the most use of. So at ABC, we thought we would give you the low down on each idea and help make that important decision, after all converting a room can add real value to your home.

Home Office

This option is popular by many, and rightly so as they’re a great alternative when a room is too small to be used as a bedroom. The essentials include: a desk, desk chair and lots of storage for files and paper work. Use hanging shelves instead of filing cabinets to give additional space, this may allow room for a sofa bed to make the room even more flexible for when visitors come. Home offices benefit from clean, subdued colours to create a professional atmosphere. Pale yellow stimulates quick thinking and white always looks smart in busy areas.

Dressing Room

The layout of a dressing room is crucial, it’s important to have enough space to move around, to ensure the room doesn’t appear as just a store room for all your clothes. Fitted cupboards and wardrobes are brilliant at making the most of space, however if you decide to use these consider leaving a wall free for flexibility. Good lighting around a mirror is a bonus and the bigger the mirror, the bigger the room will feel. Use clean and soothing colours, nothing too bright or patterned that would detract from the simplicity of the room.

There are many options to choose from when planning a kid’s playroom as the choice of colour can even affect the way children play. Pale blues or greens help keep children calm, however, if you want them to be stimulated, try using a bright shade such as red. Perhaps avoid cartoon character theming if you’ll be using it as a guest room and add a curtain across shelving to hide chaos.

Once you’ve transformed the spare room and removed all the previous clutter, we have flexible and affordable self storage units across London in Wandsworth, Camden and Southwark to store your unwanted items, allowing you to make the most of your spare room.
