Moving house is said to be one of the most stressful times in life, up there with starting a new job or getting married. There’s a huge amount of organising, packing and tidying to do, but here at ABC Selfstore, we don’t believe moving house needs to be such a stressful time so we’ve have devised a list of handy hints and tips to help those about to take the plunge.
With some careful planning and a little preparation, much of the stress can be avoided. Start off by making a list and consider what items are fragile and need protective packaging. Calculate how much bubble wrap, strong tape and the amount of boxes you will need per room, this way you’ll be sure to be prepared for anything you find lurking in the cupboards.
Have a clear out
Take some time to sift through your belongings and have a clear-out. You can make up a box for charity and if you have time, hold a car boot sale or log onto an online auction. You could even put the proceeds of your sold goods towards some re-decorating or a well-deserved meal out once you’re settled in! Alternatively if you’re not one to get rid of things we will happily look after them in one of our self storage units in London whether Wandsworth, Camden or Southwark.
Pack a moving day survival kit
Don’t forget you won’t be able to unpack everything on moving day, so it’s worth deciding what you might need easy access too soon after you cross the threshold of your new home. Create an essentials box for the first night, include everything from tea and coffee to toiletries and utensils. Other useful items that should be kept close to hand are a torch, a first-aid kit and a small tool kit.
Create a document box
Store all important documents such as passports, house deeds, wills and insurance papers in one box or file to ensure easy access. This should also prevent any panic attacks when you can’t find those important documents, just make sure it’s kept in a safe place whilst moving. It may also be a good idea to create electronic copies of important documents by scanning and saving them onto a computer.
Visit the local attractions
If you are moving to somewhere you are not familiar with, visit the local neighbourhood and have a walk around the area. This can make the transition to your new house less overwhelming and you can begin to feel at home in your new town. It will also allow you to find the closest shops so you will know where to go to stock up on necessities during your first few busy days.
Best of luck with the move! Don’t forget our flexible and affordable self storage units are located in Wandsworth, Camden and Southwark and the team will happily look after those extra bits and bobs, even if it’s just until you’re settled in your lovely new home.
