As hundreds of thousands of students prepare to head back to university for the start of the new academic year, London continues to be the most popular UK city for students to study.
With excellent universities and world class nightlife, there are major benefits of living and studying in London and little surprise that London ranked as the second best student city in the world.
But before you all pack up and head to the bright lights, there are also some serious downsides to studying in the capital too – namely, that the city has some of the highest rental prices in the country.
To set the scene, Freshers looking to find their feet can expect to pay £170 a week for a room in a standard London hall of residence, while those in their second year can graduate to a tiny bedsit in Egerton Garden Mews for ‘only’ £275 per week. The bedsit was advertised as being “so small tenants have to climb a ladder to get to the raised bed area”, so hardly a lap of luxury.
Yet, if this seems eye-wateringly expensive, there’s reportedly a new breed of student in town looking for accommodation that’s a step up from your average digs and that come at even greater expense.
According to the Guardian, there’s a big upswing in “silver-spoon” foreign students seeing flats in some of the most desirable parts of central London including Mayfair, Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Kensington.
They may be the offspring of rich royals, overseas oligarchs or African heads of state but they’re looking to live in a secure, luxury environment whilst studying in London. These lucky students are paying more than £2,000 a week, replacing bankers as the most common tenants of the most expensive flats.
It’s clear that there’s a variety of student accommodation available and that space is a precious commodity in London with every square foot coming at a significant cost.
