With more than 4.2 million people now reportedly working from home in the first three months of 2014, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggests that this is the highest level of home workers since records began in 1998.
So, with more and more of us choosing to work from home, it’s important that we take the time to create the perfect home working environment. There’s so much more to it than simply putting a desk in a room, it’s about creating a great space that will enable you to work at your best and maximise your productivity.
Whilst some may be fortunate enough to have a dedicated room, many have to fit a home office into a living space. Either way, it’s equally important to utilize the space well to create an organised and clutter free work area.
If you are short of room, ensure that you make the most every nook and cranny from wall space for shelving to the space under your desk. At the right height, filing cabinets and drawers can also double as stands for your printer and other essential office equipment. Equally, you can’t hope to remain organised with too many things around so make sure your working space remains uncluttered with only the minimum required furniture and belongings.
It’s important that you enjoy spending time in your working environment, and personalising it (without cluttering it!) can help with this. Consider framing some maps of your favourite places or inspirational images that will help focus the mind. You can also personalise your office through your own choice of furniture, flooring or wall covering as well as your choice of colour.
In order to remain focussed, it’s important that you don’t have too many distractions in your office or fill it with too much fun. If you have access to games, television and other consumable media, you can’t expect to get very much work done.
It’s also important to be self-disciplined, with a clear divide between when work begins and work ends, and to be strict about not letting yourself become distracted or regularly interrupted in order to get the most out of your assigned working hours.
