The Anthony Nolan Charity has been organising a fundraising Hero Day in November for three years. It sees Anthony Nolan staff and supporters dress up as heroes and sell hero-themed cakes and biscuits in a bid to raise as much money as possible for the charity.
This year all of the team at ABC Selfstore in Camden will be taking part on Thursday 20th November (the day before the official day) by dressing up as their favourite superhero or someone they find heroic. Self storage customers and the general public will be able to visit the store on York Way, Camden and get their photo taken in the Hero Photo Booth as well as enjoying some yummy cakes from the bake sale, entering the prize draw and judging the best dressed Hero.
We have been asking the ABC team “How are you an everyday hero?”…
Who are Anthony Nolan?
Anthony Nolan is the UK’s blood cancer charity and bone marrow register. It matches remarkable people willing to donate their stem cells to strangers in desperate need of a stem cell or bone marrow transplant. Anthony Nolan, now in its 40th anniversary year, was the world’s first bone marrow register.
Anthony Nolan Facts:
Anthony Nolan need more young men aged 16-30 to sign up, as they are most likely to be chosen to donate but only make up just 15% of the register.
Anthony Nolan want someone who has a transplant to have the greatest possible chance of life. However, currently, only 60% of transplant recipients receive the best possible match, and this drops dramatically to 20.5% if you’re from a black, Asian or ethnic minority background. By building and diversifying their register they will be able to provide the best match to even more people with blood cancer.
Now, patients and donors are given the opportunity to meet two years after the transplant if both are in good health and want to do so. Until this point, they are required to remain anonymous.
ABC have been lucky enough to help out this amazing charity by storing their spit kits in one of their self storage units at Camden. These kits are vital to helping the 2,000 people in the UK who need a bone marrow (or stem cell) transplant from a stranger each year.
Someone is diagnosed with blood cancer every 20 minutes and many only have a 30% chance of having the same tissue type as a sibling – the spit kits are a vital tool to finding matching donors.
