Studying Southside…

Graduating students

Southwark is one of London’s most ancient Borough’s, in fact, archeological digs have uncovered evidence of prehistoric settlement and it was the south bank of a major crossing point for Londinium during the Roman occupation. It could almost be described as London’s Left ventricle –  an essential part of the beating heart of our Capital.  With a northerly boundary along the Thames through the centre of the city, it presents an eclectic mix of history and culture. It also boasts an interesting range of educational opportunities in range of different subjects.

Here’s our look at the opportunities that are out there for studying Southside…

On first glance, Southwark might seem a poorer relation to Camden when it comes to studying. Maybe it lacks some of the ‘Redbrick’ association with University of London’s establishments North of the River, but delve a little deeper and you’ll find there’s lots of education on offer that provides choice and inspiration in equal measure…

Lewisham Southwark College

Set across three separate Campus’s, ‘LESOCO’ is a further education college providing a wide range of courses for 16-18 year olds, as we’ll as mature students. The range of subjects is as broad as you’ll find, but the emphasis is on vocational qualifications – the kind of stuff that’s just right for getting you into the world of work – without creating yourself a huge student debt.

There’s courses in construction – including Bricklaying, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Painting and Decorating   – so something for just about anyone who fancies forging a career in a trade.  The artistically inclined are well catered for too – with a range of vocational courses in Art, Dance, Drama and Theatre.

Our Ossory Road Self Storage centre is handily placed almost equidistant between the Lewisham and Waterloo Campus’. So if you’re studying at either, are living in between and need some extra space, then our Southwark branch have some great self storage for students.

London Southbank University

The South Bank is renowned as one of London’s cultural centres. Melvyn Bragg even titled a television show after it. There’s a lot going on. London’s Southbank University was established in 1892 and has a really exciting range of modern degrees to choose from.

If those Crime drama TV shows have got you wanting to be a super-sleuth, then how about a degree in Criminology? You could combine it with Law or Psychology. Or if you’ve recently discovered your diet has an amazing effect on your general sense of health and wellbeing – then perhaps the BSc (Hons) in Food and Nutrition is more your, ahem, cup-of-tea.  Find out more about the interesting range of courses on offer at LSU on their main website.

LSU’s main campus is clustered around Elephant and Castle, so well connected back into London’s major transport network. It’s also just up the road from our Ossory Road store, so if you’re student digs are a bit tight and you need more space – from a locker to a large unit – we’ve got a convenient student storage solution for you.

Camberwell College of Arts

Camberwell College of Arts is a specialist art college in Camberwell that’s a little over a mile from our Southwark self storage depot in Ossory Road. It’s one of London’s smaller colleges and offers foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate students – focussed strongly on Art and Design.

Established in 1898, Camberwell is a constituency college of the University of the Arts, London, which also includes Chelsea College of Art and Design and our next the London College of Communication (see below).  CCA is a college for proper artists – offering courses in painting, fine art, sculpture, art conservation, photography, graphic design and illustration.

London College of Communication

The London College of Communication has more of a media arts focus than its Camberwell counterpart. Established in 1894 primarily focussing on printing  – it has naturally evolved to encompass ever-evolving media. Courses for autumn 2016 include diploma, foundation, undergraduate and post-graduate qualifications in graphic design, photography, advertising, film and animation and journalism.

Like Co-collegiate Camberwell,  campus is at Elephant and Castle – so handily connected to access the best that London has to offer – whilst benefitting from being in the beating heart of Southwark. And as with Camberwell it’s close enough to our Ossory Road branch, so if you find yourself limited on student space, you can rent a storage unit with us to get more.

Morley College

Founded in 1889, Morley is one of London’s leading centres for adult education. It must be a great place to study – because it ranks as London’s top college for learner satisfaction (according to Further Education Choices). Morley caters for a wide variety of students – in short and part time education. If you’re seriously thinking of becoming a Youtuber – then their short course in Making Movies on your DSLR or Smartphone will be right up your street. If, on the other hand, you fancy becoming the next Calvin Harris – then their 3hr course called ‘How to become a DJ Producer’ might be a great starting point.

Situated on the western side of the Southwark Peninsula close to the Imperial War museum, Morley is well connected place to study. AT 2.2 miles it’s a little further than other colleges from our Southwark depot – but if you’re in accommodation to the east, we’ll still be well placed to help you with our storage needs.

Goldsmiths’, UoL

Part of the University of London Collegiate, Goldsmiths’ is technically in the borough of Lewisham – but it’s pretty close to the south western border – and it’s not like there’s a fence or anything. Goldsmiths’ is another college specialising in the arts (it must be something about being south of the river) – particularly fine art, design, psychology, music. politics and media. Over 20 Turner prize nominated artists studied at Goldsmiths’ – which might be a good or bad thing, depending on your artistic view of the controversial art prize.

So if you’re studying at an of these colleges in Southwark Borough – and find yourself in need of additional space, get in touch. Our super-friendly team will be happy to help with your Southwark Student Storage Needs.
