Have you ever seen a hippo taking a cruise down the Thames? It sounds like the start of a terrible joke … but it actually happened. Well, it may not have been the living, breathing animal itself but in fact a wooden replica that sailed down the Thames as part of the Totally Thames Festival.

Throughout the month of September, the spotlight falls on the iconic river Thames bringing it to life with an exciting plethora of events spanning a mere 42-mile stretch of the river.

Last years festival saw 2.6million people take to the banks of the river Thames across the 30 days and this year it is expected to attract greater numbers all looking to revel in river themed activities. 2016’s Totally Thames Festival will once again bring the river to life in a celebration of all things arts, culture and river-related. There will be plenty of opportunities to get on and into the water, from paddle steamers to paddle boarding, cruising on a Tall Ship to wild swimming.

For those who are more comfortable keeping their two feet on dry land, the river bank will be bustling with people undertaking activities such as mudlarking on the foreshore and an open day at Tower Beach. The festival will also drift further ashore with concerts taking place in riverside churches and theatre performances at unique nautical inspired venues.

Along with all of the above there will be plenty of opportunity to get active including the 20k Thames Bridges Trek, the fishing, kayaking and boat trips at Tidefest and the annual, highly anticipated, Source to Sea River Relay. With over 150 Totally Thames events to choose from you can be forgiven for feeling slightly baffled where to even begin.

However, Totally Thames Festival is worth making a splash about so take the time to explore the events programme and see what grabs your attention.
