Boxing Day: Its History

ABC Lady with BoxHere at ABC Selfstore, we’re all about boxes and storage, be it small affordable lockers through to large self contained storage space, for all your items or boxes. So this got us thinking – why is Boxing Day called Boxing Day? Does the founder of the day share the same appreciation for storage as us?

Sadly, we think not. Let’s delve into the history of 26th December. Countries across the globe celebrate this bank holiday, whilst some have renamed the day. For instance, South Africa renamed the 26th December, the Day of Goodwill, whereas in Italy, people refer to it as St. Stephens Day.

The name for Boxing Day has several competing theories as to why it has its name. Firstly, one theory suggests that it is in reference to Alms Boxes which are placed in places of worship to collect donations for the poor. A contrasting theory suggests that it could be a custom from the late Roman era, where metal boxes were placed outside churches in order to collect special offerings for the Feast of Saint Stephen.

Closer to home, in Britain, Boxing Day was a day where trades-people collected ‘Christmas boxes’ which contained money or presents on the first weekday after Christmas as a thank you from their employer for their hard work throughout the year. This tradition is linked to an even older custom where the servants of the wealthy would have to wait on their masters on Christmas Day, and thus, as a result, were given Boxing Day off work to visit their families. Each servant would be given a box to take home from their Master, and this often included gifts, bonuses or leftover food.

In modern times, Boxing Day has been come to be known as the year’s best shopping day. Forget Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Boxing Day is the original and ultimate sale date. With retailers trying to clear out old stock to make room for the new collections come 2015, why not clear out your home in time for January?
