Well, that’s 2016 out of the way, and most people seem to be saying Good Riddance. Other parts of the world seemed to go completely to pot, we lost a multitude of leading lights from across the entertainment industry and to top it all, people in the UK were divided by Brexit. Oh, and the less said about President Trump, the better.
So now it’s 2017, let’s focus on something altogether more positive. If you’re for looking forward, not back (after all you can’t change anything that’s happened), here are some suggestions as to things you might do in 2017…
Take up something new
Sports, hobbies and pastimes – they’re what keeps our time on the planet interesting. They’re also a great way to meet new people and make new friends. So if in 2016 you found life a little underwhelming, how about taking the plunge with something you’ve never done before? It could be a musical instrument – maybe piano or guitar. It might be an exciting sport – perhaps running, cycling, rock-climbing, skiing or sailing. Or maybe a new hobby such as modelling, knitting, cooking or even making home brew.
See more shows
Entertainment is the spice of life and busy schedules mean it’s often hard to find the time to get out and enjoy live performance or a good film. If you like a good show, maybe make a resolution that as a family you’ll get along to see something at least once a month. You might head ‘up west’ – but what will it be in 2017? Maybe Wicked – the story of the witches from the Wizard of Oz, or Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Go for a promotion
Maybe work has become a bit hum-drum and you’re ready for a step-up, or the boss is retiring and there’ll be a reshuffle in the office. If you’re bored in your job, then going for a promotion could be the solution to challenge yourself more. Keep an eye out for the opportunities, make sure you develop a tip-top Curriculum Vitae and get your head round that competency based interviewing that seems to be all the rage. Come to think of it – if you’re after a total change of scene – then stay up to date with Job Opportunities here at ABC.
Start a Business
If you’ve got an idea for a business – maybe something you’ve been toying with for a few years – then you could make 2017 the year you go for it. It will depend on the stage of life and situation you find yourself in, but start by asking yourself: ‘what’s stopping me?’ List through all the reasons you’ve never done it and see if any of them really can’t be overcome. You’ll almost certainly find it’s simply a question of risk and it will come down to whether you want to move out of your comfort zone into something that pushes you. Life really is too short to carry on doing something you don’t enjoy, so if you’re currently stuck in a rut, running your own business could be the solution you are after.
If you ask most people what more they want from life, many will say to see the world and experience different cultures – which is why travel is close to the top of most people’s Bucket lists. You could make travel an important part of your New Year’s Focus. You’ll need to budget for it, of course. But there are places worth seeing before they change forever. Cuba is one – since the USA restored diplomatic relations and lifted its embargo with the caribbean island – it is likely to change as an influx of American tourists flood to the island. Another place that is changing at a rate of knots is China, the commercial success of the country has seen the population become more affluent, leading to the import of more westernised culture and technology.
