How to Spring Clean Your Living Room

As part of our ABC Selfstore spring cleaning series, we would like to give you comprehensive tips and advice on cleansing your living room.

Your lounge or living room is the place where you spend most of your time relaxing and well, lounging around after a hard day’s work – so it’s going to get a little dirty over time. Okay, it’s not going to be as bad as taking on the kitchen oven (oh, the humanity), but a living room does need a little TLC nonetheless. That said, here are our spring cleaning tips:

Let the light in

We’re not suggesting you’re vampires, but with living rooms especially, it always pays to let the light in so you can seek out the spots of dirt or dust you wouldn’t usually see. While you’re at it, if you have curtains or drapes, use this as an opportunity to remove them from the rails and take them to the dry cleaner.

Clear your shelves and sideboards

Grab all items sitting your shelves and decide whether or not you want to keep them (a 1920s dolly toilet roll holder or empty giant novelty beer can, really?). And as we always say, throw away the ‘not keeps’; immediately, making sure you give anything in decent condition to your local charity shop. Then, dust all of the items you want to keep thoroughly and set them all aside.

Work from top to bottom

Dust and debris falls to the floor – that’s gravity for you – so make sure you dust the top corners of your room first before working your way down to shelves, sideboard, tables, TV stands, and finally the floor. Dust first, then wipe, then polish, making you attack all of those hard to reach places. When you’re vacuuming, apply a scented carpet powder (unless you have hard floors) and make sure you lift up the couch – who knows what’s living under there?

Give your soft furnishings a good beating

Make sure you wash all of your cushion covers as suggested on the labels and grab any throws or sofa pillows, take them outside and give them a good old beating, removing any dust and restoring some life to their shape in the process – they’ll look feel, and smell brand new afterwards.

Apply the finishing touches

Use a top quality window cleaning solution to shine up any living room windows, Brasso any metal-based items, take out the trash, put everything back in its place, and add a fresh bouquet of flowers into the mix. Then, go to your freshly cleansed kitchen, grab a cold brewski, soft drink, or a glass of plonk, kick back, put on Netflix, and enjoy your brand new and improved living room.

Oh, and remember…

“You’re off to Great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting! So…..get on your way!” – Dr. Seuss
